What Is the Best Way to Clean Range Hood Filters?

A range hood filter is the removable metal screen or baffle that sits in the underside of the hood and strips grease out of cooking air before it reaches the fan and duct. The best way to clean one is a hot soak: water as hot as the tap runs, a degreaser or a generous slug of dish soap, fifteen to thirty minutes of dwell, then a soft brush and a rinse. Soak time is the ingredient that matters. Scrubbing a dry, cold filter is the slowest possible route to a clean one.

The method that works, step by step

Nothing here needs a special product. It needs heat, a surfactant, and patience in that order.

Pull the filter properly. Most mesh filters release with a spring clip or small handle and drop out at an angle. Support it with your other hand, because a loaded filter is heavier than it looks and it will drip. Note which way round it sat, since many have a right way up and an inverted filter stops grease draining where it should.

Fill the sink with the hottest water you can get. Heat does half the job. A soak that starts hot and stays hot for twenty minutes lifts more than an hour in lukewarm water. If the sink cools fast, boil a kettle and top it up.

Add degreaser or dish soap. An alkaline kitchen degreaser is the fast option. Dish soap is gentler on the metal but needs more of it and more time. Either way the surfactant breaks the grease film into droplets the water can carry away.

Leave it alone for fifteen to thirty minutes. This is the part people skip. The solution has to penetrate several folded layers of mesh that no brush reaches. If the filter is badly neglected, check at thirty minutes and re-soak in fresh hot water rather than attacking it.

Brush gently, then rinse and dry. A soft nylon brush along the mesh, not across it. Rinse until the water runs clear and dry the filter fully before it goes back, because a wet filter in a warm hood collects dust immediately.

Degreaser or hot water and dish soap: which is better?

Degreaser is faster and harsher. Dish soap is slower and safer. For a filter cleaned on a routine, dish soap is usually enough.

A dedicated kitchen degreaser is alkaline, which is exactly what cuts cooking fat, and it handles in ten minutes what dish soap takes half an hour to do. That strength is also the risk. Strongly alkaline products attack aluminium, and most domestic hood filters are aluminium mesh. One exposure usually leaves a dull grey stain. Repeated exposure etches the surface, and an etched filter holds grease more stubbornly every time.

The practical compromise: dish soap and heat for routine cleaning, diluted degreaser used briefly for a filter that has gone too long, and always a full rinse so nothing keeps working on the metal in the drying rack. What damages an aluminium mesh filter

Most filters that get replaced were not worn out. They were cleaned badly.

Aluminium mesh is thin, soft, and folded into several layers to increase the surface grease hits. That construction is why it works and why it is fragile. Three things wreck it.

Strong alkali plus heat. Oven cleaner, caustic drain products, and hot dishwasher detergent all react with aluminium. The visible result is a dull grey or blackened surface. The invisible result is roughened, pitted metal that holds grease better than it did when new.

Mechanical force. A wire brush, a scouring pad, or hard pressure crushes the mesh flat in patches. Crushed mesh does not filter, it blocks, and air routes around it through whatever is still open.

Bending the frame. Prying a stuck filter out with a screwdriver distorts the frame so it no longer seats squarely. A filter that does not seat leaves a gap, and unfiltered air goes straight past it into the fan.

None of this is dramatic and all of it is cumulative. A filter treated gently with heat and soap lasts years. The same filter run through the dishwasher monthly is visibly finished inside two.

When is a filter past saving?

Hold it up to a light after cleaning. If the light does not come through, neither does the air.

Replace rather than persist when the mesh will not open up after a proper hot soak, when the frame has pulled away at a corner, when whole sections are crushed flat, or when the metal has gone soft and powdery with corrosion. Commercial baffle filters: a different object entirely

Baffle filters do the same job by a different mechanism, and they are the type required on a commercial cook line.

A baffle filter is heavy stainless or galvanised steel formed into interlocking angled channels. Air entering it makes a series of sharp turns, and grease droplets, being heavier than air, cannot follow and slam into the metal instead. They drain down the channels into a trough rather than soaking into a mat. That drainage is the point: a baffle keeps working as it loads, where mesh progressively blocks. Can you put range hood filters in the dishwasher?
